My name is Karen.... I have dystonia.
Seventeen years ago I never had heard of dystonia, until I was diagnosed with it in my left hand. Over the years, my symptoms continued to develop, severly affecting my mobility and speech. Today, dystonia affects my whole body.
Due to the medical research and the dedication of some physicians, my final diagnosis came in 2004 of Rapid Onset Dystonia Parkinsonism (RPD). I have been told it is a unique and rare form of dystonia. The diligence of the physicians to find ways to ease the symptoms has been ongoing for years. As the research of dystonia has been evolving, there is still much to learn. Genetic testing is now available to families for early detection. Dystonia has been a major part of my life, but it has not defined who I am. I am a daughter, a sister, an aunt and a friend. I now am adding an advocate for those who are like me. Participating in Dystance4Dystonia is a way that my family, friends, and I can help make a difference.
